Book Review: The Prince Warriors Series
If you've ever wished for a clear, compelling explanation of spiritual warfare, then let me introduce you to The Prince Warriors. I started this series expecting a fun adventure story; I finished it truly changed.
Written by Priscilla Shirer with Gina Detwiler, this series follows a group of young friends drawn into Ahoratos, an unseen realm where they are trained and armed to fight a very real enemy. The entire premise is built on the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10-18, a connection evident in every chapter. This isn't a loose, "inspired by" tie to Scripture. It's a deliberate, thoughtful unpacking of what that armor truly looks like in practice.
A Story and an Education
I cannot overstate how much I gained spiritually from these books. This was far more than simple enjoyment of a good story. It was an education, and an enjoyable one at that. The series provides clear, concrete examples and explanations of the armor of God in practical, easy-to-understand ways. Instead of leaving concepts like the belt of truth or the shield of faith abstract, the story shows characters using each piece in actual battle, making these ideas finally feel tangible to me.
It also paints a vivid picture of spiritual warfare. I found myself completely drawn into each story. I laughed, cried, and even talked out loud to the characters, cheering them on or warning them of danger I could see coming but they couldn't. That's the mark of storytelling that works. It doesn't just entertain; it involves you. And I definitely felt like I was part of the story.
Where the Story Bled Into Real Life
What surprised me most was how the lessons extended beyond the page. In the weeks I was reading, I found myself recognizing spiritual attacks, stray thoughts, attitudes, and reactions in my own life, just as the characters did in the book. I'd catch myself remembering specific advice given by the story's Christ-figure guide and applying it in the moment. That's rare for any book, let alone a middle-grade series.
The book series even prompted me to undertake my own in-depth Bible study on the armor of God. It wasn't my first time studying that passage, but this time it clicked in a way it never had before, and I genuinely believe the story made the difference. Seeing the armor lived out in a narrative gave me a framework I could carry back into Scripture, and suddenly passages I'd read a dozen times before felt fresh and personal.
I also deeply appreciated how honestly the series portrays the Christian walk. It doesn't pretend the journey is easy or that the instructions always make sense immediately. The heroes make mistakes. There's genuine forgiveness for sin, but also real consequences. That kind of honesty is exactly what Scripture models, and it's refreshing to see it handled with such care in fiction.
A Note on Age and Intensity
A few scenes lean toward scary or intense, so I'd use discretion with very young readers. But for older elementary kids through adults, I recommend this series without hesitation. This is a rare case where a "children's" series has as much (and perhaps more) to offer grown readers.
