God’s Rubber Ducky
Last Friday, I talked a bit about the leviathan and its formidable armor. Today, I want to take another look at this creature from the Bible, but I guarantee you, the perspective will be completely different. It may, in fact, cause you to laugh out loud or perhaps shout, "Hallelujah!" Intrigued? Good, let's do this!
Now, if you've read Job chapters 40 and 41, you know that God describes this creature in terrifying detail. We're talking about a monster with scales like shields, breath that kindles coals, and a mouth that shoots out flames. Job 41:33 says, "Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear." This thing is the stuff of nightmares—a fire-breathing, armor-plated sea monster that makes Godzilla look like a goldfish.
But here's where it gets interesting. When you flip over to Psalm 104:26, suddenly the Leviathan gets a completely different introduction: "There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein." Wait... PLAY? The same creature that Job describes as unconquerable and terrifying is God's bath toy? I can almost picture the Almighty giving Leviathan a little squeeze and making it squeak.
The contrast is so stark it's almost comical. To Job, the Leviathan represents the ultimate in earthly terror. To God, it's a rubber ducky. And herein lies the beautiful, humbling truth: What terrifies us is nothing more than a plaything to our Almighty God.
Think about that for a moment. The things that keep you awake at night are your Leviathans. They're massive, fire-breathing monsters that loom over you, making you feel small and helpless. You can't see a way around them or through them. They've got you cornered, and you're certain they're going to devour you whole.
But to God? They're rubber duckies. Not because they aren't real or because your fear isn't valid, but because He is THAT much bigger than anything you're facing. The God who created the Leviathan for His own entertainment is the same God who holds your life in His hands. The One who made the monster is the One who can manage your problems.
I love what God says to Job in chapter 41:10-11: "None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine."
In other words, if you can't even handle the Leviathan, how do you expect to figure out what I'm doing? And if everything belongs to Me, including that monster you're so afraid of, don't you think I can handle it?
This perspective shift changes everything. When I'm overwhelmed by my circumstances, I need to remember that I'm looking at them from Job's perspective, from the water level, where the monster looks enormous. But God is looking at them from Heaven's throne room, where He holds the universe in His hand and the Leviathan is just another one of His creations, splashing around for His pleasure.
So the next time you're facing your own personal Leviathan, remember this: Your dragon is God's rubber ducky. What terrifies you doesn't even make Him flinch. And the God who can turn a sea monster into a bath toy can certainly handle whatever you're facing today.
"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation." - Isaiah 12:2
