The Call To Give

The flurry of opening presents is often the center of Christmas morning, but once the wrapping paper is cleared, we should let our thoughts settle on the ultimate transaction of the season: God giving His Son.

Yesterday was about receiving the gift of Christ. Today is about reflecting on what that gift calls us to do in return.

The Apostle Paul challenges the early church with this question, which is just as powerful for us (John 1:12, KJV, paraphrased for context): "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."

God gave His Son, and in turn, He gave us the power to become His children. Our lives, then, become one long opportunity to imitate God’s generous spirit.

The Wise Men set the perfect example for us. They gave their best as an act of worship. They understood that the appropriate response to the Savior’s birth is not simply receiving but giving.

The joy of Christmas should never stop at the edge of our own hearts. It should spill over into acts of kindness, generosity, and service. Christ came to give, and now we are called to embody His giving heart toward a world still in need.

This doesn't always mean money. Sometimes, the most valuable thing we can give is our:

  • Time: Offering an hour to someone who is lonely or overwhelmed.

  • Talent: Using the unique abilities God gave you to bless your community or church.

  • Attention: Putting down your phone to truly listen to a friend or family member.

My encouragement today is to keep the spirit of giving alive long after Christmas morning. Because Christ gave us everything, we should never be stingy with what we have. Let us ask the Lord to show us one practical way we can give of ourselves today, mirroring the glorious generosity of our Heavenly Father.
